Where to Sail on the Chesapeake Bay
Destinations
A Few of Our Favorites
Hammock Island is well located within easy reach of many excellent cruising destinations.
Here are just a few local sailing destinations that we like.
Get out your cruising guides and go places!
-
Swan Creek
Swan Creek is directly across the Bay from Bodkin Creek. There is a long bar that runs south from Swan Point.
On the way, you will pass the entrance to Rock Hall.
Limited anchorage is available and there are marinas and a lively small town.
-
Eagle's Nest
Eagle's Nest on the Magothy, closest river to the south, is one of our favorites.
As you enter the Magothy, circle around Gibson Island (to starboard) until you pass Holland Point.
There you will find a large tree-lined anchorage across from a beautiful and picturesque horse farm.
-
Chester River
This is a beautiful river with enough picturesque creeks and anchorages to keep you exploring for a week or more. Queenstown, Grays Inn Creek, Langford Creek and the Corsica are all worth at least an overnight stay.
Go far enough, and you'll get to Chestertown, a lovely Eastern Shore town.
-
Baltimore
Baltimore is a uniquely urban destination with its ships, gantry cranes, waterfront industry, museums and restaurants.
The Inner Harbor Marina and Harbor Marina East are in the heart of things. A little further out are the Anchorage and Henderson's Wharf near Fells Point and Hamden.
-
Annapolis
Annapolis is widely referred to as “America's Sailing Capital” located in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay.
It has a laid-back vibe, a bustling downtown scene, historic landmarks, art galleries, restaurants, and blends its colonial history with modern amenities. Annapolis's waterfront lifestyle is sought by many.
There are mooring buoys along the Naval Academy sea wall. Pick one up and either dinghy ashore or call for a water taxi to take you from boat to shore.
Looking for Some Sailing Camaraderie?
Consider the Chesapeake Corinthian Sailing Club.
They hold regular gatherings, including events at Hammock Island. Several members, including their Commodore, are slip holders at Hammock Island Marina.
Membership dues are very reasonable, so check 'em out!
